The Pinzgauer is increasingly replacing the Land Rover Defender in the military utility vehicle role,[2] despite its high cost of upwards of US$100,000 per unit. Pinzgauer (or Pinz as it is known to most British soldiers) is more common as a utility vehicle in Royal Artillery units due to its employment as a light gun tractor. A new armoured version called the "Vector" entered service in the British Army in early 2007, as part of an effort to provide safer patrol vehicles for troops in Afghanistan.
The 66 Vector PPV (Protected Patrol Vehicle) would, according to the manufacturer, "Build on the existing proven design, with enhancements that will include a combination of physical protection, as well as the use of sophisticated electronic counter measures to maximise survivability while on patrol". However, the Vector PPV was found to have unreliable suspension and wheel hubs as well as poor protection against improvised explosive devices. It quickly lost the confidence of field commanders and was withdrawn from service.[6]
Pinzgauer Service Manual
In May 71, the first two-axle all-terrain vehicles Steyr-Puch Pinzgauer 710 had already entered the service of the Swiss army, and a year later they were joined by trucks on a three-axle chassis Steyr-Puch Pinzgauer 712.

The air-cooled 2.5-liter inline-four was serviced with a replacement fuel pump, carburetors, and valve cover and oil pan gaskets as well as a valve adjustment in July 2018 according to the selling dealer. Exhaust smoke is noted on cold starts as seen in this video.
A five-speed manual transaxle routes power to all four wheels through a two-speed transfer case and three locking differentials. The drivetrain was serviced with new seals for the transfer case input shaft and portal axles under current ownership.

The interior is rugged, versatile, and provides you with pure function. The steering wheel feels purposeful and grippy, and the manual transmission is right where you want it. You do get a working heater, which is a welcomed piece that you don't find on all military-grade vehicles. The passenger area shows more of the military-grade engineering. The opposed bench seating will sit up to eight people total. But when there's not an entire squad that needs transporting, this easily transforms into a flat load floor capable of two NATO pallets. In fact, this has a full one-ton capacity!
When you take some time to look at the undercarriage photos, you will instantly understand what makes a Pinzgauer so special. It has fully independent suspension with portal axles built over a rugged tube chassis. The result is better ground clearance and individual angles for each wheel. The correct 2.5-liter motor is mounted along this rigid backbone that gives it sturdy position to power the front and rear axles. This is an air-cooled engine, and so has superior operation in extreme weather conditions. It has great low-end torque, and it's geared to take full advantage of it. Plus, the five-speed manual transmission is mated to a two-speed transfer case with shift-on-the-fly capability that was specifically designed to give exceptional off-road performance when the 4x4 is engaged. And it's impressive 4x4 prowess is enhanced further by modern BF Goodrich Mud Terrain tires.
